JAKARTA - Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Major General Suharyanto, asked the public not only to be aware of the transmission of COVID-19 or the threat of the new variant of the Omicron virus during the Christmas and New Year's 2022 holidays.

However, the public is also asked to be prepared for potential natural disasters due to the weather entering the peak of the rainy season at the end of the year.

Suharyanto said the peak period of the rainy season is expected to occur in the range of December to February 2022.

"Towards Christmas and the new year, the public must be prepared to anticipate the peak period of the rainy season, which of course can potentially lead to hydrometeorological disasters, especially floods," said Suharyanto during a working meeting with Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR), Monday, December 13.

In addition to giving warnings, continued Suharyanto, BNPB has also prepared a preparedness plan in stages starting from the village level.

"We recommend that hydrometeorological disaster preparedness be carried out in stages at every level starting from the provincial level to the village level," he said.

In addition, said Suharyanto, the BNPB has coordinated and predicted with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding zone maps. disaster prone areas.

Based on estimates from the BMKG, he said, several areas that need to be watched out for because they have a high potential for flooding in December are Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, North Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi, and Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi.

"As well as Mimika Regency, Papua, and Wamena Regency, Papua," he explained.
