JAKARTA - KAI's VP of Public Relations Joni Martinus revealed that the Jabodetabek LRT train will operate automatically without a driver.

Joni explained that the Jabodebek LRT will be operated using a communication-based train control (CBTC) system with a grade of automation (GoA) level 3.

The CBTC system is a communication-based train operation, so that the system can operate trains and project schedules automatically and also be supervised automatically from the operation control center.

"GoA3 is the level of automation of train operations, where operations are carried out automatically without a driver," said Joni in his statement, Monday, December 13.

Joni explained that the advantage of the GoA 3 system is that all train operations are carried out automatically. Thus, reducing the potential for accidents due to human error, increasing the accuracy of train schedules, and optimizing travel schedules.

However, there are still operational officers on the train for handling emergency conditions and serving customers. These officers are called Train Attendants.

"If there is a disruption to facilities or infrastructure, the Train Attendant officers will take over the operation of the train manually at a limited speed," said Joni.

Furthermore, the Jabodebek LRT will operate according to the schedule that has been uploaded to the signaling system at the operation control center (OCC). All Jabodebek LRT operations then run automatically by following a predetermined schedule.

"Operators at OCC will monitor the running of the LRT and will only intervene if discrepancies are found, such as delays, power supply disruptions, and so on," said Joni.

For information, the GoA 3 operating system on the Jabodebek LRT is planned for the first time to be tested on a limited basis in June 2022 and will continue to be tested until the planned inauguration of the Jabodebek LRT on August 17, 2022.

The operation of trains using the CBTC GoA 3 system used on the Jabodebek LRT has also been implemented in other parts of the world such as the United States, China, Japan, Singapore, Spain, England, Brazil, and several other countries.
