Update On Mount Semeru Eruption Victims December 10, SAR: Victims Become 43 People

JAKARTA - The Surabaya SAR team said that the number of victims who died from the hot clouds falling from Mount Semeru in Lumajang Regency as of Friday afternoon was 43 people.

Head of the Operations Section of the Surabaya SAR Office, I Wayan Suyatna, informed that the hot clouds from Mount Semeru that occurred on December 4 also caused as many as 82 people to suffer minor injuries.

"In addition, it was also recorded that 20 victims suffered serious injuries. And based on community reports, information was obtained as many as 12 people were declared missing," said Suyatno to reporters in Lumajang, Friday, December 10, as reported by Antara.

Wayan ensured the search was still being carried out by the joint SAR team.

The parties involved in the search for victims included the Surabaya SAR Office, the Military District Command (Kodim) 0821 Lumajang and the Lumajang Resort Police (Polres).

In addition, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of East Java Province, Lumajang Regency BPBD, Civil Service Police Unit, Lumajang Transportation Service, Jember and Lumajang SAR Potential, as well as a number of other potential SAR organizations.

Meanwhile, the joint SAR team is divided into three search units.

The SAR 1 unit conducted a search in the Koboan Bulk Hamlet, Supiturang Village, Pronojiwo District, Lumajang.

The SAR 2 unit conducted a search in the H Satuhan sand mine area. In addition, the SAR 3 unit conducted a search in Kebondeli Hamlet and Renteng Village, Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang.

"The search was carried out with light equipment such as hoes, shovels and also assisted by East Java Police sniffer dogs," he said

The search by the joint SAR team, he said, was often hampered by cloudy weather conditions during the day which caused the peak of Mount Semeru to be covered with thick clouds making it difficult to visualize.

"If the weather is cloudy, search efforts will be temporarily suspended for the safety of all personnel," said Wayan.
