BPBD Lembata Urges Fishermen Not To Go To Sea Around Mount Ile Werung, Which Had Erupted

KUPANG - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, appealed to fishermen not to go to sea around Mount Ile Werung to avoid disasters caused by the eruption of the underwater volcano.

"We advise fishermen on the Lembata coast for the time being not to go to sea around Mount Ile Werung, which is currently on an eruption alert status," said Head of BPBD Lembata Regency, Sipri Meru, quoted by Antara, Friday, December 3.

Sipri said the status of the Ile Werung underwater volcano in Atadei District has now risen from alert to alert so that mitigation steps need to be taken by the community.

Sipri Meru said that people living around Mount Ile Werung such as Wulir Village need to increase their vigilance to avoid a catastrophic eruption.

"The fishermen in Dlir Village as well as from other coastal villages in Lembata, we ask not to go to sea around the mountain for safety," he said.

Sipri said the community around the volcano had not yet been evacuated, but his party would continue to monitor conditions on the ground.

"If in the future the level of mountain activity increases, then the evacuation of residents can be carried out," he continued.

As previously reported, the Center for Volcanology, Mitigation, Disaster and Geology (PVBMG) reported that the Ile Werung underwater volcano erupted and boasted.

"This incident has caused sea levels to rise," said Volcano monitoring post officer Ile Werung Wilson Wuri Wutun.

He explained that according to reports from residents, the sea level rose on Sunday, November 28 night and on Monday, November 29 with a sea level of less than one meter and an inundation distance of about 30 meters.

"We (Ile Werung Volcano Monitoring Station, ed) recorded this eruption starting on Sunday (28/11) which started at 21.35 central Indonesia time and lasted for one hour," he said.

On Monday, November 29, starting at 05.17 central Indonesia time, eruption and gust activity was recorded again. Until now, the eruption activity is still ongoing but has not shown a significant increase.
