Nyatoh Tropical Cyclone Moves Away From Indonesia

JAKARTA - Deputy for Meteorology at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Guswanto said Tropical Cyclone Nyatoh is expected to move away from Indonesian territory.

"It is estimated that the intensity of Tropical Cyclone Nyatoh will strengthen in the next 24 hours and move northward," said Guswanto in a BMKG press release quoted by Antara, Thursday, December 2.

Tropical Cyclone Nyatoh was detected on Thursday morning in the Philippine Sea north of Papua at coordinates 16.5 North Latitude and 135.5 East Longitude, about 1,830 km northeast of Tahuna.

The cyclone was moving north at a speed of 6 knots (11 km/hour), away from Indonesian territory at a speed of 70 knots (130 km/hour) and a pressure of 970 hPa.

Guswanto said that until 19.00 WIB, the tropical cyclone was estimated to be in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua at coordinates 20.8 North Latitude and 138.3 East Longitude, about 2390 km northeast of Tahuna.

According to him, during that period the cyclone was moving north at a speed of 8 knots (15 km/hour) and away from Indonesian territory at a speed of 75 knots (140 km/hour) and a pressure of 965 hPa.

The presence of Tropical Cyclone Nyatoh will have an indirect impact on the weather in Indonesia in the next 24 hours.

The cyclone is predicted to generate waves as high as 1.25 to 2.5 meters in the southern Maluku Sea, Bitung waters, Sitaro Islands, southern waters of the Sangihe Islands, eastern Sulawesi Sea, southern Maluku Sea, southern waters of Southeast Sulawesi, western and eastern waters. Halmahera, as well as the northern waters of West Papua to Papua.

In the northern waters of the Sangihe Islands, northern waters of the Talaud Islands, northern Maluku Sea, northern waters of Halmahera, Halmahera Sea, and the northern Pacific Ocean from Halmahera to Papua, the presence of the cyclone has the potential to cause waves as high as 2.5 to four meters.
