JAKARTA - The Central Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) agrees with the findings of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) which said it failed to create a safe and comfortable work environment for its employees.
This was conveyed after the alleged sexual harassment and bullying experienced by one of his employees, MS.
After months of investigation, Komnas HAM finally announced the results of the examination and its recommendations regarding the alleged bullying and harassment experienced by the Central KPI employee, MS.
Komnas HAM Commissioner Beka Ulung Hapsara said this failure was proven by the normalization of harassment and bullying behavior among Central KPI employees. He even said that this action was considered a common thing and was considered a joke without any follow-up.
"It is strongly suspected that there were incidents of bullying against MS and forms of jokes or humor that were offensive and mocked the conditions and situations of individual personal lives, habits in relations between employees in an environment that contained harsh and sexist words such as bastards and others in the KPI environment, " said Beka at an online press conference.
"There are jokes or humor that are physically offensive, such as forcing them to take off their clothes, pushing a bench, and hitting this is the first conclusion," he added.
Komnas HAM suspects that the bullying incident was not only experienced by MS but also experienced by other employees. Moreover, the normalization of this behavior has already occurred and is considered to show the closeness of friendship.
With all these reasons, the Central KPI is concluded to be unable to create a safe and comfortable environment to work in. In addition, the Central KPI is also considered to have failed to support recovery efforts for victims.
This, Beka said, can be seen from the absence of internal regulations and proper tools in an effort to prevent and deal with acts of sexual harassment and bullying in the work environment. "And there are no guidelines yet in responding to and handling cases of sexual harassment and bullying in the work environment," he said.
For all the incidents that happened to MS, Komnas HAM then considered that a number of MS's rights as individuals had been violated. The first violation is against the right to security.
"Second, the violation of rights is free from threats of violence, and improper treatment. So when we talk about human rights, this is talking about human dignity. a form of action that degrades human dignity," he said.
Komnas HAM's statement was then responded to by the Deputy Chairman of the Central KPI, Mulyo Hadi Purnomo. He admitted that his party had failed to protect its employees from sexual harassment and bullying because it was experienced by one of its employees, MS.
"If it is later stated that we failed to do that (protecting employees, ed) then maybe it can also be stated like that," he said at an online press conference.

Even so, Mulyo said his party was not just silent. He said the Central KPI had formed an internal investigation team to investigate the allegation.
However, the results were not announced to prevent any presumption of non-objectivity. "Because of that (the results, ed) we completely leave it to the police and also the National Human Rights Commission and the internal investigations carried out by the KPI itself, we convey to the Kominfo, for example, or the DPR," he said.
In addition, the Central KPI also ensures that it does not intervene in the current legal process and ensures that victims' recovery is the focus.
"Basically we have carried out several stages, several processes have even included us, for example, helping the recovery process, including the treatment that has been carried out by the victim," concluded Mulyo.
