JAKARTA - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, once again filled the material at the 143rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), General Assembly, in Madrid, Spain.

Puan conveyed the results of the global parliamentary meeting regarding the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or sustainable development held by the Indonesian Parliament together with the previous IPU.

Puan spoke in two sessions of the 143rd IPU governing council held at IFEMA Palacio Municipal, Madrid, Tuesday, November 30. In the first session, Puan submitted a report on the activities of the First Global Parliamentary Meeting on Achieving the SDGs which was held by the Indonesian House of Representatives together with the IPU virtually on 28-30 September 2021.

"The purpose of the meeting is to discuss how parliamentarians can advance the implementation of the SDGs through innovative actions and collaborations", said Puan who spoke in English before the IPU forum as quoted in a written statement.

As conveyed by Puan, there were 3 main topics discussed by IPU members during the conference on SDGs. First, said Puan, is regarding the contribution of parliament to the realization of the SDGs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The second is about 'don't leave anyone, do we keep our promises'. And the third topic is how Covid-19 becomes a wake-up call for universal health investment and makes health emergency preparedness a priority", she explained.

According to Puan, participants of the First Global Parliament conference on the achievement of SDGs have realized that the SDGs are under huge challenges. This is because the world is currently facing the COVID-19 crisis.

“Besides, the potential climate crisis also makes the situation more complex. Global warming has exacerbated poverty, inequality, and other social problems. In this critical situation, the role of parliament and members of parliament is more important than ever”, explained Puan.

The discussion in the First Global Parliamentary Meeting on Achieving the SDGs itself has concluded four important points to encourage the achievement of the SDGs. Puan detailed the results of the IPU member's SDGs forum.

"First to accelerate the recovery from the pandemic, then to coordinate economic and fiscal policies, then to coordinate efforts to help poor and developing countries, and finally to continue to maintain global commitments in tackling climate change", she said.

Puan also reported three action plans considered by IPU members regarding the SDGs. Starting from strengthening awareness of SDGs among parliamentarians, inaugurating certain bodies with a strong legal basis on SDGs in parliament, and establishing a comprehensive parliamentary legal framework that allows parliamentarians to implement all aspects of the SDGs.

“I believe that meetings should be held regularly by the IPU to keep the momentum alive. Because achieving the SDGs is about strong leadership and political will”, said Puan.

“Parliament must be at the forefront of our joint efforts to create an equal and resilient world”, continued Puan.
