JAKARTA - Volunteers for presidential candidates and vice-presidential candidates for the 2024 presidential election (Pilpres) have recently emerged. Political dynamics are also getting warmer ahead of the 5-year democratic party contestation which will be held in approximately 2-3 years.
Recently, a group of people who call themselves as Volunteers for Supporting the Love of the Republic (PCR) declared their support for Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir as presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres).
The National Coordinator (Kornas) of PCR, Fuadul Aufa, revealed the reason for his party to pair the two economic ministers in the Indonesia Maju cabinet. The main thing is the government's success in handling the COVID-19 pandemic until it is under control at this time.
"This success cannot be separated from the role of Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment and also as Coordinator for Handling PPKM for the Java-Bali Region," said Fuadul to reporters, Wednesday, October 10.
Meanwhile, according to Fuadul, Erick Tohir is considered successful in carrying out his duties well as Minister of SOEs. Erick, he said, also played an important role in handling the pandemic as the Chief Executive of the COVID-19 Handling and Economic Recovery Committee (KPCPEN).
Therefore, added Fuadul, by looking at the track record of performance and personality traits, the PCR Volunteers came to the conclusion to declare the Luhut-Erick pair in the 2024 presidential election.
"The Love of the Republic (PCR) supporters are looking forward to their duet in the 2024 presidential election as presidential and vice-presidential candidates," he said.
This declaration certainly makes the public wonder, is the volunteer serious or just a joke. The reason is, the names of the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir are rumored to be involved in the polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) business practice.
Luhut's name is associated with PT Genomics Solidaritas Indonesia (GSI). This company claims to have the largest and fastest laboratory in PCR test services.
Meanwhile, the Adaro Bangun Negeri Foundation, which is affiliated with PT Adaro Energy Tbk (Tbk), a company owned by the brother of SOE Minister Erick Thohir, Boy Thohir, ranked second.

"From the electability point of view, this pair is not worthy of being nominated in the 2024 presidential election contestation," Jamiluddin said in Jakarta, Wednesday, November 10.
"So, it's really surprising that there are children from the nation who are willing to volunteer for the pair. Because, let alone winning, the chances of being promoted by political parties are very small," he continued.
Jamiluddin considered that the motivation of the volunteers to carry Luhut and Erick was questionable. "Are the PCR volunteers serious about carrying out or just to insinuate the couple regarding the case of the alleged PCR business," he said.
Regardless of the volunteer's motivation, according to Jamiluddin, the use of the name PCR does have a selling point. Because, he said, the choice of an actual name will indeed be easier to attract attention and be remembered by the public.
"However, because the name PCR is popular in a negative connotation, it is feared that the efforts of volunteers to carry LBP and ET will be negatively perceived by the public. Every PCR volunteer comes to the fore, negative perceptions arise in the minds of the community towards LBP and ET," he explained.
In fact, added Jamiluddin, if it continues to appear then it is possible confirmation will occur. This will certainly harm Luhut and Erick, as well as the true meaning of PCR itself.
"So, the volunteers should evaluate the use of the name PCR. Do not let the use of that name backfire for the candidates," said Jamiluddin.
"We are outside of oblique issues related to a game or business between PCR, we are not in that area," said Fuadul Aufa in Central Jakarta, Wednesday, November 10.
Even if it is true that there are ministers who do PCR business, Fuadul continued, then this is a legal matter that is inappropriate for PCR Volunteers to comment on. "We leave everything to the realm of law," he said.
Fuadul emphasized that the support for Luhut and Erick was given based on an assessment of their performance while carrying out their duties in the government in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Because we see that Mr. Luhut and Erick are very worthy figures and figures," he concluded.
