JAKARTA - System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian spoke to Grammy.com about Elasticity, his upcoming solo mini album (EP). Previously he described this album as a rock album.

"These are mainly songs that I wanted to write with System Of A Down. When we couldn't find common ground, I just went on and got it over with," Tankian said.

"These songs have more of a synth feel than the rest of System Of A Down's songs, but they're still loaded with heavy grooves and also lots of lovely ballad material that's more like Elect The Dead and some of my previous solo material. This is an EP. which is very good. "

Scheduled for release later this year, the title Elasticity is a play on words from the 2011 album Toxicity System Of A Down.

Tankian explained to SPIN: "I thought I would call it Elasticity just because I wanted to play it with System Of A Down and it didn't happen. That's what I thought about calling it. I haven't finished it yet, but that's what I thought about calling it."

System Of A Down hasn't released new music since the albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize, which were released in 2005.

In 2018, guitarist Daron Malakian publicly accused Tankian of not wanting to record new material. Tankian responded that creative and financial problems with Malakian led to a deadlock. In a message on Facebook, Tankian wrote that Malakian wanted to control System Of A Down's creative process, take more publishing money and be the only band member to speak to the press.

Last year, Tankian told Rolling Stone that the public broadcast of his disagreement with Daron had not opened up any more talk about the future of System Of A Down.

"I think it releases a lot of tension and negativity," he said. "Everything is becoming more general and open, and that's it. No further discussion."

System Of A Down played a number of live shows last May, including the headline slot at Columbus, the Sonic Temple festival in Ohio and the Chicago Open Air.

The band was scheduled to play a number of European festivals this summer, but all of those events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the world.
