JAKARTA - Kidney cancer cases in Indonesia continue to show an increasing trend from year to year. Sadly, this deadly disease often shows no symptoms at all in the early stages.
Responding to this phenomenon, Holywings Peduli held a social action in the form of free health checks and educational seminars in commemoration of World Kidney Cancer Day at Helen's Night Mart & Captain Livehouse Gunawarman, South Jakarta, on Sunday, June 28.
Andrew Susanto as the President Commissioner of the Holywings Group and also the Chairman of the Holywings Care Program stated that this initiative is the commitment of his party in raising public awareness of the health of vital organs. According to him, the community must be facilitated so that they are not afraid to do early detection.
"We want to invite the public to better understand the risk factors for kidney cancer and the importance of having regular health checks. Through this activity, we hope that the public can get the right education while taking advantage of the free health services we provide," said Andrew.
As a seminar speaker, dr. Fristly Nasri from Siloam Hospital Kelapa Dua, Tangerang, explained that the kidneys have a very vital function for human survival.
Starting from filtering toxins in the blood, regulating fluid and electrolyte balance, to producing hormones that control blood pressure and the formation of red blood cells. If this organ is damaged due to cancer malignancy, the stakes are life.
Fristly said that kidney cancer generally starts from stage one and rarely uses the term stage zero. The chance of recovery in stage one is actually very high, reaching 90 percent or more, but the biggest challenge is that most patients only come when the cancer has entered the advanced stage.
"Unfortunately, there is no routine screening program for kidney cancer for the entire population, such as mammography for breast cancer or colonoscopy for intestinal cancer," said Dr. Fristly Nasri.
"Early detection is an important key in the treatment of kidney cancer. Some risk factors that need to be considered include obesity, high blood pressure, family history, and chronic kidney disease," he continued.
Furthermore, Dr. Fristly explained that typical clinical symptoms such as bloody urine (hematuria), persistent lower back pain, and the presence of a lump in the abdomen will only appear when the tumor has grown.
"The classic triad of kidney cancer often appears in more advanced diseases. In fact, quite a few cases of early stage kidney cancer are found accidentally when patients undergo an ultrasound or CT scan for other diseases," he said.
For patients who are successfully diagnosed in the early stages, surgical procedures in the form of partial kidney removal (partial nephrectomy) or the entire kidney (radical nephrectomy) become the main option to paralyze cancer cells.
In order to reduce the risk of post-operative recurrence, patients are required to change their total lifestyle to be healthier. This includes quitting smoking, maintaining an ideal body weight, limiting ultra-processed foods, and avoiding the consumption of drugs indiscriminately without a doctor's prescription that can potentially aggravate kidney work.
