JAKARTA - The Recording Academy has brought good news for musicians around the world through the relaxation of regulations in the 69th Grammy Awards which will be held on February 7, 2027.

Two crucial points that underwent significant changes were the relaxation of the minimum limit of new content for the eligibility of an album (Album Eligibility) and the addition of the maximum limit for submission for the Best New Artist category.

In the previous rules, an album was required to have a minimum of 75 percent new recordings to be eligible for nomination. However, in the latest rules, the threshold has been officially cut to 66 percent.

This step was taken to reduce the disqualification of works that are widely recognized by the music industry as new albums, but are hampered by the large number of remix versions and live versions.

Not only that, the Recording Academy also changed the strict rules on the Best New Artist category which often sparked controversy. The maximum limit for a musician to be nominated in this category has been increased from the original three times to four times.

The change gives a fourth chance to a number of musicians, including Ella Langley, who shone through the hit song "Choosin' Texas" and the album "Dandelion" after being submitted in the previous three periods.

Harvey Mason Jr. as the CEO of the Grammys said that the formation of a special advisory team for the Best New Artist category last year was the main foundation for this change.

"The changes we've made to this category will allow for a little more flexibility and reflect the reality that the development of artists looks different than it did a few years ago," Mason Jr. said, citing the Recording Academy's official website, Wednesday, June 17.

The team is tasked with reviewing the guidelines to be in line with the pattern of career growth of musicians who need a longer incubation period before their work really explodes in the market. This change is expected to trigger a healthier flexibility in the industry.

"Once again, this is all about ensuring our process reflects what's happening in our industry today," he concluded.
