JAKARTA - Nadin Amizah brings news about the health condition of her vocal cords. Through a post on her personal Instagram Story, the singer of "Bertaut" admitted that she was facing difficulties in singing due to a suspected diagnosis of spasmodic dysphonia (SD).
This disorder is a neurological condition that affects the laryngeal muscles, causing the voice to sound strained, choked, or hoarse suddenly.
Nadin said that the initial symptoms he felt were changes in the texture of his voice to sound like someone who had just smoked.
"The problem is that I don't smoke, the problem is that my voice is also normal, it shouldn't be hoarse," said Nadin Amizah, quoting Instagram Story, Friday, January 9.
Even though physically he feels able to speak and sing, the burden felt by his throat muscles is much heavier than usual.
This condition makes Nadin's singing activity, which was originally considered easy, now turns into a challenging task that is physically and mentally exhausting.
Nadin also highlighted a significant decrease in vocal range. He admitted that he was no longer as flexible as before in taking high notes.
"Usually I sing 'Mendarah', I can still belting, it's still safe, it's nice," he said. "Now if I want to belting I have to use a very healthy technique."
Interestingly, Nadin chose to continue to perform on stage despite fighting against pain. Based on the information he learned, spasmodic dysphonia does not require total vocal rest.
Instead of stopping, he chose to change the way he spoke in order to minimize the pain that often arises when performing the fourth or fifth song in a performance.
"The point is, when I perform, I hold on tightly for my safety. I feel sick, really sick. So now I have to say this (change my voice to be more round). Because this is the healthiest," said Nadin.
"I will continue to sing. I love singing. Maybe there is a little bit of that and I'm still recovering," he concluded.
