JAKARTA - Satriyo Yudi Wahono, better known as Piyu, has reopened the struggle sheet of musicians in the past.
The PADI Reborn guitarist highlighted the striking difference between the hard efforts to make music in the analog era and all the conveniences offered by today's digital age.
Piyu reminisced about the early days of her career with PADI, where they had to physically bring the demo work to be submitted to the record label.
The struggle is not just a formality, but a time-consuming, energy, and extra cost journey.
"So sometimes I'm a bit annoyed too. Crazy in my old age, I had to take a train from Surabaya to Jakarta just to listen to this (demonstration) to the producer," said Piyu in Senayan, Central Jakarta recently.
The struggle is still ongoing in the capital city. Arriving in Jakarta, he and his colleagues had to switch to public transportation to visit one by one the record label offices.
"And we have to go one by one. We have to go up to public transportation first, we have to go up to the producer's office, to Sony Music, to Musica, to Aquarius," added the guitarist.
Technology has drastically changed the industrial landscape, cutting the process that used to be very bureaucratic. Enough with a touch of fingers, they can easily send song samples or demos to well-known music producers.
In fact, Piyu herself admits that she is often the target of young musicians who take advantage of the Direct Message (DM) feature on social media.
"The children can now DM me directly, tell me to listen. 'Mas, please listen to my work'. Then after that they also DM producers," he said.
This phenomenon, according to Piyu, is clear evidence of how digitalization has cut the long process which used to require total sacrifices, making the struggle of today's musicians feel more instant and much easier.
