Dangdut's Reasons Haven't Been Proposed As Cultural Heritage To UNESCO

Fadli Zon revealed that the dangdut reason had not been proposed as a cultural heritage to UNESCO (Ivan Two Men/VOI)

JAKARTA - Dangdut has so far not been proposed as a cultural heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Fadli Zon as Minister of Culture revealed that the proposal would also not be made this year.

This is because the government needs to prepare several technical matters such as studies to a number of required documents to be submitted to UNESCO.

"I think dangdut music is on our list, but not this year. Maybe because it requires a study of a kind of academic paper, dosier, which is not too long actually, but about a dozen pages," said the Minister of Culture in a working meeting with Commission X DPR RI quoting ANTARA in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 4.

In addition to scripts and studies or technical requirements, he explained that other requirements are the need for support for programs from communities that are closely related to this type of original Indonesian music.

Although dangdut music has great potential, a number of things are taken into consideration in the submission. Menbud added that his party is now preparing a list of any sub-sectors that can be proposed as cultural heritage at UNESCO, at least until March.

Furthermore, another reason that dangdut music is in line for the registration of UNESCO cultural heritage is the existence of registration restrictions. Because UNESCO now only records one country for the single nomination once every two years. So in the past once a year, there wasn't, now it's every two years," he said.

However, there are other procedures, namely joint nomination and extensions that the Indonesian government has used to register kolintang music. This extension is like yesterday which was done for kolintang music, so we include the extension. Actually riding, but actually it's the same," he concluded.
