Melly Goeslaw Wants Revision Of Copyright Law Adjusted To Digital And Technological Dynamics

JAKARTA - Singers of the song Melly Goeslaw who are currently members of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission X, encourage amendments to Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright (UU Hak Cipta) to enter the 2025 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

When holding a group discussion (FGD) forum with Indonesian music actors in the DPR on Monday, November 18 yesterday the day after tomorrow, Melly stated the importance of revising the Copyright Law to prevent potential violations in the digitalization era.

"Digitalization opens the potential for copyright infringement in various forms. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen governance and regulations that are able to adapt to digital dynamics," said Melly Goeslaw, citing her video upload on Instagram, Wednesday.

Digital platforms such as social media, sites of various content, and streaming platforms are the main places for copyright distribution today. However, copyright management on this platform is very challenging because content is easily uploaded and distributed massively by users. Digital platforms often have difficulty monitoring copyright infringement as a whole, especially in detecting published and used content without permission," he continued.

Melly said the need for a revision of the Copyright Law to consider behavioral changes and seek a balance between copyright protection and freedom of information access.

The copyright law also needs to accommodate fast and unexpected technology. There needs to be a reinterpretation of the concept of moral rights in the context of digitalization," he said.

The Bimbang' singer also said that the Uu Copyright update should consider its harmonization with international standards and global best practices in copyright protection.

Regarding the massive development of technology for the music industry which is one of the objects regulated in the Copyright Law, Melly also sees the need for further legal regulation.

Technology such as AI and deep learning raise new questions about the concept of moral rights in copyright. There needs to be clear guidelines regarding the distribution and integrity of the work that is produced or modified," he concluded.
