Sony Music Group Pagari's Artist's Work From Music AI Development

JAKARTA - Sony Music Group (SMG) is known to have sent warnings to hundreds of artificial intelligence (AI) developers and music streaming services regarding the use of content from artists under its auspices.

The decision was taken in order to protect the rights of the artists, considering Sony Music Group is a big 'player' in the music industry with many great musicians.

In a statement on the official website, SMG did not completely oppose the use of AI, it even admitted that it had utilized the technology.

SMG has taken advantage of the AI's potential that is produced responsibly for use as a creative tool, revolutionizing the way songwriters and record artists create music. We support artists and songwriters who lead in utilizing new technologies to support their artwork."

However, SMG stated its position remains on ensuring the rights of songwriters and record artists, including copyright, respected.

Therefore, the affiliates of SMG, Sony Music Publishing (SMP) and Sony Music Entertainment (SME), on their own behalf and the affiliates they have or are fully controlled, make public statements confirming this. Unless it is specifically and explicitly permitted by SMEs or SMPs, depending on the case, each of them explicitly prohibits and chooses not to mine text or data, web screening or reproduction, extraction or use (TDM) of SME and/or SMP content for any purpose."

Including those related to training, development, or commercialization of any AI system, and in any way, including with bots, scripters or other automated processes, in each case as far as applicable laws in all jurisdictions are permitted.

Sony Music confirmed that the statement also applies to the works of their artists in the future, including creative works that can be identified through publicly available facilities or registered in their databases.
