Adam Lambert: I Can't Change Freddie Mercury

JAKARTA - Queen + vocalist Adam Lambert, Adam Lambert, was awarded the O2 Silver Clef Awards at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in London, England on Friday night. Speaking to Music-News.com editor Marco Gandolfi at the event, Lambert said about what it was like to sing parts that were originally written and recorded by Queen's iconic vocalist Freddie Mercury.

"Look, no one replaces Freddie Mercury. It's impossible. Freddie Mercury is a mitistic rock god. He doesn't just sing those songs, he also writes a lot of songs. That's the story in many of those songs," Lambert said.

"And if I didn't have Freddie Mercury's album, I wouldn't be near me with this music. So he was very inspiring and he definitely gave me all the material I needed even to do it on stage. So I see it always as a celebration and award for him."

Lambert also touched on Mercury's cultural heritage, saying: "I think Freddie has a lot to do. I think his voice just means to you when you listen to him. He has an amazing voice, and I think, as a tool, connects him with so many people out there."

"And then writing his song he writes beautiful, humane, and emotional music about human experiences, and I think it also connects it with people. And after you take him on stage, you see his old album and he is very free and full of joy, and I think it inspires a lot of people too, including me."

Last March, Queen guitarist Brian May spoke with SiriusXM's Classic Rewind about the evolution of the live band he has led since he and drummer Roger Taylor first shared a stage with Lambert more than a decade ago.

"I think our chemistry is better than ever. I mean, Roger and I went back to hundreds of years, as you might know. But with Adam, I mean, it was good from the start, but now it's amazing. We now have real empathy on stage, real understanding. There is a connection, "explained May.

"And you probably know, we don't have a clique or backing track or anything, so we're completely free and we can feel what each other wants to do. So every night, the road will be a little different. And I like it the danger of it is very brilliant. And in my opinion, we all feel more confident.

"And in my opinion as you get older, you become more sorry for yourself. You don't take things as a mistake. You take everything as an opportunity. You can also forgive yourself younger. You think, 'OK, I'm still young.' But that's a different feeling. "
