JAKARTA - Nirvana producer Butch Vig recalls the moment when he used The Beatles as a bait to persuade Kurt Cobain to work on the raw material for Nevermind's breakthrough album that frontman didn't like.

In a recent interview with Consequence, Vig said he first heard a rough demonstration of the song Sells Like Teen Spirit when Cobain sent him a cassette recorded in the boombox.

Even though he "heard like trash", he knew that Cobain with Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl played very closely.

Vig said Nirvana "means business" when they arrive at the studio working on the album Nevermind, but Cobain somewhat objected to working on it seriously.

"I told Kurt, 'Come on overdub it in a separate voice,' and at first he was really ready for it," recalled the producer, citing Ultimate Classic Rock.

"But then, as soon as you start doing it, he's going to be a little angry: 'I don't want to do it again.' I keep saying, 'you know, remember we're trying to make this sound cooler than life, man."

Vig revealed the first song they got when he wanted Cobain to do an additional overdub vocals, the frontman just said, 'I really don't feel like I have to do that, it feels fake.'"

That's when Vig took advantage of the fact that Cobain was a big fan of The Beatles. And even though he admired John Lennon's aesthetics, he admired the writing of Paul McCartney's melody song and its melodic sensitivity.

The producer admitted that he kept the information as a reference point and took it during the recording session.

I kept saying, 'The Beatles doubled (record twice) all their vocals. Listen to John Lennon. Listen to Paul McCartney. All vocals have double lanes.' And he sat there for about five seconds, then he said, 'Okay.'

Vig said Cobain was very careful during the recording session because the vocalist and guitarist wanted to maintain the authenticity of his punk after signing a contract with Geffen Records.

The recording was very simple. Basically they played the song, with some overdub and some harmonies and vocals.... I really concentrate more on the performance and sound of everything recorded. And it really sounds Nevermind," Vig underlined the recording session of the hit song Sells Like Teen Spirit.
