JAKARTA - Toyota will resell the Camry in Japan. The difference is, the sedan is not made domestically, but imported from the United States.

Citing a Kyodo News report, Saturday, June 6, Toyota Motor Corp. said it would start importing US-made Camrys back to Japan as early as this fall. The move comes as the Japanese automaker still faces tariff policy pressure from the Donald Trump administration.

Toyota is targeting sales of 10,000 units of US-made Camrys per year in Japan. The car will be produced with a right-hand drive to comply with Japanese traffic rules.

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said the move was expected to help improve the trade balance between the US and Japan.

"If this step can help improve the trade balance to some extent, there is hope that the tariff issue will be further studied," Toyoda said at an event related to the Camry in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

The Camry has previously been sold in Japan, but sales will be discontinued in 2023.

According to Kyodo News, Toyota's plan comes as Trump administration tariff policies still affect the Japanese automaker's financial performance.

Two US-made Toyota models, the Tundra pickup truck and the Highlander SUV, have been on sale in Tokyo since April.

With the Camry, Toyota adds to the list of US-made cars that enter the Japanese market.
