This Brother Of MG Motor Is Ready To Launch In England With L6 Luxury Saloons

JAKARTA - IM Motors, a premium electric car brand that is MG's brother, will soon enter the British market next year. Its debut was marked by the official announcement of L6 Saloon's participation in the Geneva Motor Show from February 26 to March 2024.

It is known, reported by Autocar, February 22, IM (Intelligent Mobility) was founded at the end of 2020 as a collaboration between SAIC (MG's address), e-commerce giant Alibaba, and R&D specialist Zhangjiang Hi-Tech. This brand has launched L7, a premium executive sedan, at the end of 2021.

Along with the arrival of IM to Europe next year, L7 will be accompanied by L6 Saloon. This sedan is claimed to have a range of up to 800 km and acceleration of 0-100 km/hour in less than 3 seconds.

Although technical details including designs and other things have not been disclosed, it is estimated that L6 Saloon will use similar settings to L7. L7 itself relies on 93 kWh of batteries for range up to 614 km and is equipped with 11 kW of wireless charging technology.

IM Motors is expected to be a strong competitor to BYD and Tesla in the UK market. Previously, they had launched the LS6 and LS7 SUVs in China in February 2023, each of which became the rivals of the Tesla Model Y and Model X. In China, these two SUVs are priced between 214,900 yuan to 459,800 yuan or equivalent to Rp466 million-Rp900 million.

While also last year, IM Motors was in the spotlight when announcing a technical partnership with Audi. This deal allows Audi to use the IM platform to launch several Chinese market-only EVs, alternatively to Volkswagen Group's delayed SSP platform.

Currently, IM Motors is already in England by showing off a car at the main MG showroom in Marylebone, London. This step aims to measure public enthusiasm for the new brand.

The official launch of IM Motors is expected to take place in 2025, after MG updated their product line with the new MG 3 and MG HS, as well as the latest version of MG 4 and the second generation Marvel-R SUV.

Chances are, SAIC needs to build a European factory first before it can produce EVs for the right steering market in a profitable manner. The location of the factory itself is rumored to have the potential to be in the UK.
