JAKARTA - Mitsubishi All New Triton recently launched and introduced in the Japan Mobility Show 2023. Reportedly, the manufacturer with the logo of three diamonds is developing an innovative plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system for the Triton model.
This news refers to a Carsales.com.au Australia report quoted from Paultan, Thursday, November 2,minda Sawase from EV Powertrain Engineering Development Division Mitsubishi revealed that the full powertrain of electricity will not be coming soon, at least in the next five years.
Although details and launch date of the PHEV system for Triton have not been announced, Sawase stated that the system will be different from the settings used in existing models, such as the PHEV Outlander.
Triton, according to Sawase, will use a P2 PHEV system that utilizes electric motors between engines and transmissions, enabling the use of pure electric propulsion if needed.
"Mitsubishi Motors is conducting research and development of the [P2 PHEV] system, but at this time there is no certainty regarding the launch time," he said.
Furthermore, Sawase explained that the use of modular P2 designs is more suitable to meet the needs of Triton, which is able to travel off-road with low-distance transmission.
"Until now, our PHEV technology is a transverse powertrain design, based on front wheels driving or all-wheel drives," he added.

Responding to questions about the reason Mitsubishi chose to use the PHEV gasoline powertrain, a Mitsubishi spokesman who accompanied Sawase stated that the decision was motivated by the many requests to adopt the technology.
"We fully understand that there is a significant demand for PHEV with diesel engines, but in terms of costs, it is not possible," said the spokesman.
