JAKARTA - Tom Holland once invited Norway national team striker Erling Haaland to dinner via a short message. However, the message from the Spider-Man star was not answered because Haaland did not recognize him.

Gulf News quoted Tuesday, July 14, saying Holland told the story while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote his latest film, The Odyssey.

"This kind of experience is important for actors to remain humble," Holland said with a laugh.

Holland then recalled when he tried to contact the Manchester City player.

"I thought I would send a message and invite him to dinner. It turns out there was no reply, even an answer like, 'I'm busy tonight because I'm playing football.' There was absolutely nothing," he said.

The incident started at the Monaco Grand Prix. Holland saw Haaland in a special guest room across from his seat while watching Lewis Hamilton race.

He then sent a message and invited the 25-year-old footballer to dinner. The message was not answered.

Holland was not offended even though his invitation ended without a reply.

"He's been incredible. He's a true legend," he said.

Haaland previously explained his reasons in the Norwegian television show, A Laget. The Norwegian national team striker admitted that he rarely watched movies so he didn't recognize many celebrities.

"It's a bit embarrassing, to be honest. I don't watch films very often, so I don't know who these people are," said Haaland.

He admitted that he had received a message from someone inviting him to dinner. Because he didn't recognize the sender, Haaland chose not to reply.

After finding out that the sender of the message was Holland, Haaland intended to contact him.

"It seems like I have to send him a message now. I really have forgotten about it," he said.

Holland was at the Jimmy Fallon show to promote The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of Homer's epic.

He plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, and stars alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and Samantha Morton.

The Odyssey is scheduled to be released globally on July 17, including in IMAX and 4DX formats. The film passed the censor without cuts in India with an A classification for adult audiences.

Holland will also appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The story takes place four years after No Way Home, when no one remembers Peter Parker's secret identity.

The film, which also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Sadie Sink, is scheduled to be released in India on July 30 and globally from July 31.
