JAKARTA - Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown responded to a negative comment about her marriage to Jake Bongiovi. She rejected the assumption of netizens that her husband was too controlling or did not support her.

Reported by Gulf News, quoted Saturday, June 13, criticism of Bongiovi was widespread after rumors emerged that he helped arrange Brown's script and did not want his wife to have romantic scenes with her male co-star.

The spotlight got hotter when paparazzi photos showed Brown carrying a baby carriage and several bags, while Bongiovi walked beside him without carrying anything. From the photo, a number of netizens judged Bongiovi not to help Brown.

Brown discussed the criticism on Kylie Kelce's Not Gonna Lie podcast on June 11. He questioned why women who bring their own stuff are not considered to have received help.

"Hello, I'm Millie Bobby Brown, and honestly, since when are women considered incapable of carrying their own bags, baby seats, and belongings?" said Brown.

Brown explained that he often arranges practical affairs when traveling. He moves quickly and has planned many things in advance.

"All of this started because I was carrying a suitcase, a bag, and my child. People said, 'Your husband didn't bring anything.' Even though I had walked more than three miles ahead. I had planned everything all night," he said.

According to Brown, the public often uses a double standard. Women are encouraged to be independent and not dependent on men. However, when women are seen to be independent, people ask why their husbands don't help.

"We always talk about women's empowerment, 'You can do it', and 'You don't need a man'. But when I say, 'Well, I can carry my own stuff', people instead ask, 'Where's your husband?'" he said.

Brown also defended Bongiovi. He said his husband was polite, sweet, and always ready to help her. But Bongiovi also knew that Brown was able to take care of himself.

"No one knows my husband. My husband is the most polite, kindest person, and will do anything for me. But he also knows that I am capable," Brown said.

Brown and Bongiovi married in 2024. They later adopted a daughter. Brown's decision to become a mother at 21 also sparked criticism on social media.

Brown said being a mother made her life feel more complete. He and Bongiovi chose to keep their family life private, although they occasionally shared their experiences as new parents.

Since becoming widely known as a child actress through Stranger Things, Brown is used to living under the public spotlight. He also often talks about the pressure of growing up with comments from people who never finish.

Now, Brown wants to raise her daughter away from excessive pressure, more confident, and proud of herself.

"Raising a daughter with my experience of having a childhood that was so public and often criticized as a girl and an adult woman, makes me very serious about raising a child who is proud of herself and confident," Brown said.
