JAKARTA - SM Entertainment announced their response after the court ruling on the lawsuit against YouTuber Sojang. They reported Sojang for personal violations related to their three groups: EXO, Red Velvet, and aespa.
"In April 2024, we filed a criminal complaint related to the channel for defamation and attacks on the Law on the Improvement of the Utilization of Information and Communication Networks and Information Protection related to EXO, Red Velvet, and aespa," SM Entertainment said on Wednesday, April 29.
On April 22, the 14th Civil Division of the Seoul District Court ruled that Sojang violated the personal rights of EXO, Red Velvet, and aespa by making a video containing personal attacks. The court ordered the YouTube channel owner to pay 130 million won or Rp1.5 M.
"The court stated that the video produced and uploaded by the YouTube channel violated the image and values of SM artists' brands, which are assets and caused losses to SM's appearance and business operations," they said, quoting the court's statement.
Due to the violation, the court ordered Sojang to pay 40 million Won in damages to the company.
"We will continue to take legal steps related to zero tolerance against YouTube channels that are personally offensive, use offensive language or habitually spread false information to protect our artists," he said.
"We urge you to immediately stop all illegal activities currently aimed at our artists. Thank you," SM Entertainment concluded.
YouTuber Sojang is a YouTube channel that talks about rumors related to K-pop artists. Before SM, Starship Entertainment sued Sojang for defamation against IVE and Jang Wonyoung. Several other solo artists have started to file lawsuits against Sojang.
