JAKARTA - Director Roger Allers, known for a number of films for Disney, died on Sunday, January 18. This sad news was confirmed by collaborator Dave Bossert through his Facebook account.
"I am saddened by the news that our friend Roger Allers has passed away for his next journey," Dave Bossert wrote the same day.
"We just exchanged emails this week when he was going to Egypt which made this loss unreal. Roger is a talented artist and filmmaker, a real pillar for Disney animation," he said.
Dave Bossert explained that Roger Allers' career began as a storyboard team in the film Tron in 1982. He worked on The Little Mermaid (1989) before becoming the story team for Beauty and the Beast (1991).
"I had the good fortune to be a crew member with Roger for many films in the late '80s and throughout the '90s. Without question, one of the nicest people you could hope to work with. He directed The Lion King, a phenomenal success but it was never overstated," he said.
Disney CEO Bob Iger also released a statement saying, "Roger Allers was a creative visionary and contributed to Disney for generations to come. He understood the power of stories, how unforgettable characters, emotions, and music can come together to create something timeless."
Born on June 29, 1949 in Rye, New York, Roger Allers first worked with Lisberger Studios for the Sesame Street series.
Then, he started working at Disney in 1985 as a storyboard artist in various films, including Oliver & Company, The Little Mermaid, The Prince and The Pauper.
He co-directed The Lion King with Rob Minkoff, which won Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globe.
Roger Allers died at the age of 76 and his two children.
