The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) entitled Preparation for the Making of Indonesian Heroic Series at the Fairmont Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday, October 14. This forum is the first step for the government to produce national heroic-themed series films as a means of inheriting the value of the struggle and strengthening the character of the nation, especially for the younger generation.
The FGD brings together historians, filmmakers, academics, and cultural stakeholders to unite views on the development and balanced narrative of films between the accuracy of history and the dramatic power of cinema.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon emphasized the importance of presenting a milestone that should not be missed. He hopes that the Proclamation event will become the main pillar in the film channel, followed by other important moments such as the Ikada General Meeting, the Rawa Gede Event, and the Renville Agreement which can be compiled with a forward and backward flow.
It's a very important big milestone. But of course there are many other events that are also heroic Surabaya, Medan Area, Ambarawa, Bandung Lautan Api, and so on. Not everything can be displayed intact, but there must be one outline that becomes the backbone of the story," said Menbud Fadli Zon.
The Minister of Culture emphasized that this historical film is not just entertainment, but also a means of national education. The younger generation needs to know how complex the struggle of the nation, which is colored by diplomacy, resistance, and the spirit of unity.
This film can be very rich if it is worked on with in-depth research and a strong approach, both history and cinematography. If necessary, it will be serialized, because two hours of film will not adequately describe the complexity of the 1945 period '1950,' he added.
Historian Batara Hutagalung supports the idea. He considered the heroic story needs to be presented with a humanist touch so that the audience is emotionally connected.
"We need input from historians so that the story raised can be interpreted appropriately by filmmakers," said Batara.
The discussion, which was moderated by Anto Dwiastoro, was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Culture, such as Director General of Development, Utilization, and Culture Development Ahmad Mahendra; Expert Staff Minister for Economics and Culture Industry Anindita Kusuma Listya; as well as Director of Film, Music, and Syaifullah Arts. From among historians, Prof. Dr. Endang Susilowati, M. Yuanda Zara, Ph.D, and Julianto Ibrahim, M. Hum. From the film world, Rahabi Mandra and Robby Ertanto were present online.
