JAKARTA – Content creator Gabriel Prince doesn't hesitate to speak out about the importance of self-care for men, dismissing the notion of toxic masculinity, which often associates skincare with femininity. He instead emphasizes that self-care makes men look cooler and more masculine.
Responding to a question about how many people feel insecure around him and whether he recommends skincare, Prince answered frankly.
"Yeah, that's usually how I always answer. I mean, especially for guys, I still feel like there's something called toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is where guys feel like if they use skincare or take care of themselves, they look feminine. But it's not, in fact, it makes you more masculine, in my opinion. Because you acknowledge that you actually care about yourself," said Gabriel Prince in South Jakarta recently.
Prince emphasized that the desire to appear perfect in front of others is a natural action for both men and women.
"And who, I mean, who doesn't want to look fresher, who doesn't want to appear more radiant, like, a brighter complexion? Yeah, I think it's actually cooler if guys actually admit that they like taking care of themselves."
It's not just motivation, Prince revealed that he's quite serious about self-care, even as a man, because he's had some unpleasant experiences with his appearance.
"I mean, there are certain things I do to really figure out what my personal color is. I also do a lot of research when it comes to skincare, of course. I also experienced a pretty bad breakout. So I had to do my own research on skincare, and I finally found products that really work for my skin," said Gabriel Prince.
Prince also decided to learn how to apply his own makeup, not just about skincare, because he experienced acne after being treated by a makeup artist.
"And about makeup, I finally decided to learn how to apply it on my own because at the time, the main reason I was experiencing breakouts was because, like the makeup artist at the time, I was using dirty brushes. So, I finally said, 'Oh well, I'd better learn on my own,'" Gabriel Prince explained.
"I mean, it's all a process. I mean, let's say, if I didn't care that much about my appearance, that's also a factor because I also work in the entertainment industry, I probably wouldn't look like those Korean oppas you know," he concluded.
