JAKARTA - In the midst of a public situation that is being hit by unrest due to a number of government policies that are considered not to side with the community, the actions of some officials are even more angry. The phenomenon of flexing or showing off wealth by unscrupulous officials in public spaces and social media is often seen as insensitive to people's conditions.

Psychologist Novi Poespita Candra from Gadjah Mada University assesses that the phenomenon of officials who are often flexible or show off their assets excessively can have an impact on social sensitivity.

"The impact of this behavior on themselves causes addiction if it is carried out continuously and forgets social sensitivity," Novi said, as quoted by ANTARA.

According to him, this behavior makes some officials lose their orientation to the deepest meaning of the position they hold. The highest achievement should not be measured by material, but from spirituality in the form of community service, especially those who are still marginalized.

The phenomenon of showing off wealth, he added, could arise as a form of self-existence search.

"There is research that finds that humans who like to shop and show their wealth is one way to create joy and satisfaction," he said.

In the context of psychology, a person's happiness is generally related to the four main hormones, namely dopamine (achieving/acknowledging), oxytocin (flavor of love/acception), serotonin (meaning), and endorphin (excitement).

However, Novi considered that the phenomenon of busy officials showed that the material was more likely to focus on dopamine.

"There are those who know it's just pursuing achievements and recognition (dopamine). Now the officials who show off their material feel that it is an achievement to be proud of," he explained.

According to Novi, a leader should have mature intellectual intelligence and ethics. That way, the actions taken are not just based on emotions or lust, but on the results of rational considerations that have a good impact on society.

"To build ethical reasoning requires continuous learning competence, high thinking so that before certain behavior they are able to think about the impact on their society," he said.

Previously, the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) General of Police (ret) Tito Karnavian had also reminded regional officials to apply a simple lifestyle and not to be trapped in flexing behavior in order to maintain public trust.
