JAKARTA - Traveling on cruise ships has become a favorite choice for many families to enjoy a vacation together. Cruise ships are also symbolized with luxury. However, a report found that not all cruise ships meet good hygiene standards.

Reported by VOI from the New York Post page on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, a report from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted an assessment of the cleanliness of cruise ships as part of the Ship Sanitation Program. This is to prevent gastrointestinal diseases.

Each ship gets a score based on a scale of 100. A number of cruise ships get a score below 85, which is considered unsatisfactory in terms of cleanliness.

The dirtiest yacht is Hapag-Lloyd's Hanseatic Inspiration, which only got the lowest score of 62. The CDC report lists several violations of the health code.

Among them, dirt-filled beer taps, live and dead insects in the swimming pool bar area, as well as rotting birds filled withbags near the outer exhaust area.

In addition, some foodstuffs that require cooling are not stored at adequate temperatures. This can pose a health risk for passengers.

Despite the breach, a Hapag-Lloyd Cruises spokesman told USA Today that the shipping company had consistently met the strict cleaning requirements over the years.

"We are deeply sorry Hanseotic Inspiration did not reach the required score for the first time. The results of this inspection do not reflect our high standards at all," Karen Schmidt, senior shipping company communications manager, told USA Today.

"We will use this opportunity to improve our process in all areas and ensure all of our ships provide the quality experience guests expect."

Other cruise ships are reported to be experiencing hygiene problems, such as Princess Cruises'Caribbean Princess, Carnival's Breeze, and Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Evrima, all of which scored 86.

According to the Daily Mail, flies and insects were found in the kitchen above the Caribbean Princess. Meanwhile, the Carnival's Breeze cruise ship is not enough to prevent pests hiding on ships.

Not only that, Carnival's Breeze was found a food bowl left outdoors during the rain. In addition, the Carnival Breeze crew bathroom was filled with garbage.

Above Envirma, flies clustered in the juice-making machine, no protection against mice, and filters in the water vortex were not substituted for two years.

However, there are several cruise ships that received a perfect score of 100, such as Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Spirit, Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Ascent, Disney Cruise Line's Disney Fantasy and Royal Caribbean International's Britain of the Seas and many more.
