TANGERANG - Lack of public awareness conducts regular examinations and fear is one of the causes of the many deaths from cancer. This was stated by a specialist in disease specialists in hematology consultants - oncology, Jeffry Beta Tenggara.

"Limited financial factors also influence the public to screen for cancer, so the death rate due to cancer is still relatively high," said Jeffry Beta Tenggara in a statement in Tangerang, quoted from ANTARA, Saturday, March 2.

He said another factor was that there were still many people who had not been able to access or get cancer services and the lack of experts.

"Despite the progress in handling cancer, in Indonesia, it turns out that there are still many people who have not received cancer services properly," he said.

He said breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world and is the main cause of death among women.

Although the prevalence is high, early detection and proper care can significantly reduce the risk of death from this disease.

Based on data from the Ministry of Health, 70 percent of breast cancer patients have entered stage three when detected. In fact, the prognosis of the survival probability of breast cancer patients on average in five years can reach 90-95 percent in stage 1, 70-75 percent in stage 2 and 10-25 percent in stage 3 and 4.

"The high prevalence rate of breast cancer shows the importance of early detection of cancer, both independently and medically," he said.

Siloam Hospital Group Managing Director, Caroline Riady said the spirit program against cancer (One Step), namely free breast screening for Indonesian women using a mamographic tool this year, was resumed with a target of 50,000 women in Indonesia. This program will be run in 14 Siloam Hospitals spread across 12 cities.

"In 2023, we have conducted breast screening for 12,000 women from 65 villages and communities and nine percent of them indicated breast cancer," he said.

Nunung, from a breast cancer survivors, added that early screening or early examination of breast cancer for women is no longer an option. This is a form of responsibility for yourself and your family.
