Burum Breakfast Can Help Prevent Stunting

JAKARTA - Breakfast is very important as a provision of body energy for activities all day so it requires healthy and nutritious food intake. However, children are often in a hurry to get to work or go to school so they don't have time to have breakfast to meet their nutritional needs, including energy.

If the energy needs at breakfast are not met, it will have an impact on the function of children's memory of lessons at school. Usually children are not able to concentrate when studying because their brain does not get enough energy. In addition, it will affect the growth and nutritional status of children.

Data from the Total Diet (SDT) Survey of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in 2020 shows that of the 25,000 children aged 6-12 years in 34 provinces, 47.7 percent of children have not met their minimum energy needs at breakfast. In fact, 66.8 percent of children have breakfast with low nutritional quality or their nutritional needs have not been met, especially the intake of vitamins and minerals.

In addition to lack of energy, low nutritional intake during breakfast can cause stunting. Therefore, Super Porridge innovates the Nutrition Education and Fertility Eating Movement program for Stunting Prevention (Efficient Bugizi Gema). This program is expected to contribute to the problem of stunting and malnutrition in toddlers and children who are becoming a serious concern from the government.

Based on data from the 2022 National Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI), stunting prevalence in Indonesia is at 21.6%. This figure is still high, considering the stunting prevalence target in 2024 is 14% while the World Health Organization (WHO) standard is below 20%.

He explained, this product is also an answer for consumers, especially mothers who often worry about their children's preferences consuming instant foods that are considered unhealthy, especially for digestion. The proof is that the instant porridge products won the 2023 Food and Nutrition Program Innovation Award at the International Symposium Food & Nutrition, Expo, and Awards (ISFANEA) held by the Indonesian Association of Nutrition and Food Experts (PERGIZI PANGAN), in collaboration with the Association of Indonesian Food and Beverage Producers (GAPMMI).
