Parents, Here's The Key To Teaching Children In Practice To Be Responsible

Your job as a parent is to provide skills for all the things your child will need to survive in his future life. One thing that is very important to teach from an early age is responsibility. Responsibility is needed so that a person is able to achieve success.

One way to teach children responsibility is to make them understand the consequences of the decisions they make. This can be taught with several principles, reported Parenting, Friday, December 30, including;

James Lehman, MSW, caretaker expert at Empowering Parents said that punishment is not an effective way to change behavior, nor is it a constructive way to assert your authority as a parent. Lehman stated that punishment places children as parties who seem worthy of receiving retaliance. Children will learn nothing under depressed conditions.

Not punishing does not mean letting children break the rules. On the other hand, Lehman suggested applying the consequences. According to him, the consequences are meant to teach or modify behavior in a positive way.

"This is different from punishment because punishment is retaliation," said Lehman.

By paying consequences, parents don't mean to hurt their children until they are deterred but instead give them the opportunity to learn that what they take can have implications for harming themselves. The consequences apply are not arbitrary. Consequences must be logical and have a positive impact on your little one's behavior.

Lehman said that parenting styles that only contain consequences without appreciation can hurt your relationship with children. Therefore, you need to balance the consequences with appreciation. If your little one has shown a change in attitude several times as a result of the implementation of the consequences, then you should give him appreciation.
