JAKARTA - Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Uno assesses that horror is a favorite genre of Indonesian people and can be an attraction for not only national but also international markets.

Indonesia does have a long history of horror nuanced content, including in the form of films. With the growth of classy directors and production houses, horror films in Indonesia are also rising in class.

Not only the presentation is getting better in terms of pictures, the talents who act in Indonesian horror films are now increasingly showing their qualified talents. Call it the most phenomenal in 2018 "Satan's Servant" made by Joko Anwar who did not sow achievements on the national but also international stage.

There is also Timo Tjahjanto's "Before the Devil Picks Up", to "Women of the Land of Hell" which was even recommended by Hollywood actor Kumail Nanjiani.

"I see that the horror genre is very strong. The horror genre is not only about us, we have strong human resources and a strong market. I think Indonesian horror films are world class. They are super scary," said Sandi as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, March 29.

The effects of suspenseful horror films are indeed often sought after by the people of Indonesia, including Sandiaga Uno's wife, Nur Asia Uno.

Sandiaga also told how his wife tried to influence him who was actually a coward to be able to enjoy the tension of horror films.

"My wife is a horror film lover. So I like to close my eyes when I'm with her. But instead, she's 'faced the reality, bro, face it'. So in my opinion that genre (is a favorite in Indonesia)," said Sandi.

In addition to horror films, Sandi also mentioned the types of films needed so that domestically produced films can become global, and can raise the theme of culture and local wisdom in Indonesia.

Sandiaga also hopes that Indonesian filmmakers can bring up local stories from their respective regions or pick up stories from tourist areas or tourist villages so that they can highlight the characteristics of Indonesia through audio-visual content.

"Films that promote Indonesianness can also be taken into account," concluded Sandiaga Uno.
