JAKARTA - Heart disease is still the largest cause of death in the world, including in Indonesia. There are many types of heart disease that are dangerous, one of which is atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is a type of arithmetic, which is a heart rhythm disorder that causes irregular and fast heart rate. Consultant for Heart Intervention and Aritmia at Eka Hospital BSD, Ignatius Yansen, said that many Indonesians suffer from atrial fibrillation.

"Heart disease is still the largest cause of death in the world," said Doctor Yansen, when met in the Kebayoran Baru area, South Jakarta, on February 19, 2025.

However, public awareness of this disease is not yet high. One of the reasons is because the symptoms of the fibrillation atrial, namely the palpitation heart, are considered a common thing, so they don't check themselves.

This is of course dangerous, because the risk from the original fibrillation is stroke to heart failure. Especially for people with advanced age, the risk factors that can be experienced are increasingly complex.

"Unfortunately, in Indonesia there are many who are not aware. This can increase the risk of stroke and the risk of heart failure," he explained.

"The main risk factor is due to age, 80 years, it's approximately 10 to 15 percent suffering from atrial fibrillation, irregular heart rhythm disturbances," he continued.

Therefore, Doctor Yansen reminded to immediately check yourself if you often experience irregular palpitations, especially if it happens often when the body rests. He also said that education to the public regarding this disease must continue to be echoed.

"That's why around the world, including in Indonesia there is something called AF Awareness Month, it was in September. We provide education about arithmetic, atrial fibrillation," he concluded.
