JAKARTA - Atrial fibrillation is one of the risk factors for stroke that should be aware of. Atrial fibrillation is a condition of irregular heart rhythm disorders.

This condition occurs when the heart atrium beats very fast and irregular. This causes the rhythm of the contraction of the heart chambers that function to pump blood to the entire body to be disturbed.

Specialist neurologist at Pondok Indah Hospital, dr. Andre Sp.N, said that atrial fibrillation is one of the main causes of stroke cases with blood vessel blockage or ischemic stroke.

"Atrial fibrillation of the heart rate is irregular so that blood clots are formed, turbulence is trapped in the heart so that when he leaves he goes into the brain, it becomes a stroke," said dr. Andre, during a media discussion in the Pondok Indah area, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Atrial fibrillation can cause a stroke because it makes the heart atrium vibrate, making it easier for blood clots to form. The clot can be carried into the blood vessels and cause a blockage, which eventually causes an ischemic stroke.

Strokes caused by atrial fibrillation can cause more severe health impacts. Such as more severe disability to death.

"Strokes caused by atrial fibrillation are usually more severe and cause more severe residual symptoms or disabilities, even death compared to other causes of stroke," he explained.

Therefore, Dr. Andre said that early detection and accurate treatment are very important in overcoming this condition. With quick treatment, the patient has a greater chance of surviving without long-term disability.

Early detection of stroke can be done quickly by recognizing some of its symptoms. Such as a smile that is not symmetrical, sudden weakening of movement, messy speech, sudden numbness, sudden blindness, to sudden severe headache.

"If one of these symptoms appears, the patient must be immediately taken to the hospital. The speed of the response can determine the extent to which the patient can be saved," he concluded.
