JAKARTA - Hypertension is still a health challenge in the world. In Indonesia, the proportion of uncontrolled hypertension patients is still very large, reaching 81 percent.

One of the reasons this can happen is due to low patient compliance with hypertension treatment, and the lack of independent blood pressure monitoring.

Many hypertension patients do not take medication regularly because they think they are fine. This may last a while, because in the long term damage to various organs or complications can occur due to uncontrolled blood pressure.

Thus, compliance with taking hypertension drugs is very important so that severe complications due to high blood pressure do not occur. Hypertension patients who take drugs and their blood pressure is controlled must also continue to take medication, even with a small dose.

"If you look at the data in the world, there are almost no hypertension patients whose tension can be controlled without hypertension," he said.

Doctor Tunggul also rejected the myth circulating in the community, which stated that consumption of long-term hypertension drugs could damage the kidneys.

"That's not true. The purpose of taking hypertension drugs is to prevent kidney damage," he continued.

In addition, it is also recommended to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Starting from controlling weight, exercising regularly, limiting salt consumption, increasing nutritious food, to quitting smoking as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
