SURABAYA - The national ceramic industry has again recorded innovations through the development of polished red body ceramic technology. PT Kobin Keramik Industri or KOBIN Tiles officially registered two invention patents for the technology for the product after undergoing research and development (R&D) processes for years.

The two patents are part of KOBIN Tiles' efforts to protect the results of innovation in answering technical challenges in the ceramic industry, especially to produce red body ceramics with a shiny surface while eliminating the orange peel effect after the polishing process.

Through the process of examination and legal assistance for intellectual property (IP) with legal expert E.L. Sajogo from MS&A Law Firm, KOBIN Tiles separated the scope of protection of the technology into two patents.

First, a process patent covering the method and formula of manufacture. Second, a product patent which provides protection against the characteristics of the final ceramic product.

Director of KOBIN Tiles Hermawan Sutantio said the registration of the two patents was a form of legal certainty as well as an appreciation for the work of the company's R&D team.

"The steps to register these two patents are a form of legal certainty and an appreciation for the hard work of the R&D team at KOBIN Tiles. We want to ensure that high-value research by the children of the nation receives strong exclusive protection, while encouraging the national ceramic industry to respect Intellectual Property Rights," said Hermawan in a written statement, Thursday, August 13.

According to the company, the patent protection provides exclusive rights to the patent holder according to the scope given in the registration. Thus, the use of technology and formulas that have been patented by other parties must refer to the applicable provisions and permits.

The innovation of polished red body ceramics was developed to answer the market's need for products with a premium look. This product offers an aesthetic similar to polished granite, but still maintains price efficiency so that it is more competitive for consumers.

KOBIN Tiles assesses that this innovation also shows the importance of technology development in strengthening the competitiveness of the national ceramic industry.
