BANDUNG - The government ensures that the Legok Nangka Waste to Energy (PSEL) Project in Bandung Regency is safe and does not pollute the environment.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung said that the burning of samph at the facility uses high-temperature incinerator technology which is claimed to be able to minimize the formation of harmful substances while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"So with the incinerator technology used at PSEL Legok Nangka, the temperature of waste processing is around above 800 degrees Celsius, so all materials that enter the facility will be processed and burned perfectly," Yuliot told the media crew when met after the Groundbreaking PSEL Project in Nagrek, Wednesday, July 29.

Yuliot explained, with this temperature, waste materials can burn perfectly so that the potential for the formation of dioxins can be suppressed.

"Dioxin is a poison and has an impact on health. With the processing of incinerators, in some countries it is also relatively safe. So there is no impact on the environment and no impact on public health," he said.

According to Yuliot, the project is an important milestone in urban waste management because it not only solves the problem of waste accumulation, but also supports the creation of a cleaner and healthier environment.

He revealed that the waste pile in Indonesia in 2025 reached 56.63 million tons. However, only 63.3 percent has been managed through final processing sites (TPA), waste banks, and integrated waste processing facilities. Meanwhile, around 20.2 million tons or 35.67 percent are still unmanaged.

"This garbage ends up being burned openly, thrown into rivers, or piling up into wild piles that pollute the environment," he said.

Through the waste to energy (WTE) program, he continued, the government is trying to reduce the waste pile and generate electricity from waste. PSEL Legok Nangka will process around 1,853 to 2,131 tons of waste per day from the cities of Bandung, Cimahi, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, Sumedang Regency, and Garut Regency.

In addition to reducing the volume of waste that ends up in landfills, the project is projected to be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 311,874 tons of CO₂ equivalent through the reduction of emissions from waste piles and the partial replacement of the use of fossil fuels in power plants.

The facility is targeted to start operating commercially in 2029 after undergoing a construction period of around 41 months. During the construction process, this project is estimated to absorb around 1,565 workers.
