BANDUNG - PT PLN (Persero) revealed that electricity generated from Waste Processing into Electrical Energy (PSEL) Legok Nangka in Bandung Regency can power 40,000 households.
PLN's Director of Project Management and Renewable Energy, Suroso Isnandar, said that in addition to electrifying houses, the 40.79 megawatt (MW) capacity project will be able to reduce waste piles in West Java.
"The electricity development will be produced later with a capacity of 40.79 MW, capable of electrifying 40,000 houses, with energy production reaching 310 GWh per year," said Suroso in his report to the Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources at the PSEL Groundbreaking in Nagrek District, Wednesday, July 29.
Suroso also mentioned that the project was one of the fastest in the procurement process. Since the assignment in January, the procurement process to the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was successfully completed in just three months.
"We highlight that this is calculated from the January assignment for the procurement process, including the fastest. Only three months later we have reached the Power Purchase Agreement or PPA with a period of up to 20 years," he said.
Through this project, continued Suroso, PSEL is projected to generate 310 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity per year. In addition to providing clean electricity supply, this facility is also capable of processing up to 2,131 tons of waste per day or about 13 percent of the total waste pile in West Java.
He continued, this project is proof that waste problems can be turned into a sustainable renewable energy source. Suroso also hopes that similar programs will continue to be developed so that the waste processing capacity in West Java can continue to increase.
"This program needs to continue, Governor, so that in the future 100 percent of this waste can be processed," he said.
PLN also provides certainty for investors through the PPA scheme for 20 years. In the initial phase, Suroso said that electricity from PSEL would be purchased by PLN at a rate of 6.92 cents per kWh, then increased to 11.4 cents per kWh in the next phase.
"No matter how much electricity is produced from this waste, PLN will continue to buy and distribute it to the public through the New Rancakasumba 150 kV Substation," said Suroso.
He added that the project was one of the implementations of Presidential Regulation Number 35 of 2018 which was considered capable of providing certainty of business feasibility for the development of waste-based power plants.
"This is one of the pride because using Presidential Decree Number 35 of 2018 has proven that the business feasibility can be guaranteed. We at PLN are also very happy because our business not only produces electricity, but also helps maintain the environment," he said.
Suroso explained that the PSEL facility will no longer use the conventional landfill method. Waste processing will utilize modern incinerator technology with a combustion temperature of around 800 degrees Celsius so that it can optimally destroy various types of waste.
"The technology is the latest, using an incinerator with a supercritical temperature of 800 degrees Celsius. So whatever goes in will be burned to ashes because this is no longer a normal burning," said Suroso.
