JAKARTA - In the midst of the increasing urgency of the climate change issue, PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) strengthens its commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability through the implementation of the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles that are integrated into the company's business strategy.

This concrete step is realized through increased use of renewable energy and acceleration of post-mining land reclamation. Corporate Secretary of SIG, Vita Mahreyni, emphasized that sustainability is now a competitive advantage that encourages innovation while maintaining the stability of the company's operations.

"Through various strategic initiatives, SIG proves that sustainable performance can go hand in hand with business performance, even strengthening the company's operational resilience," he said in a written statement, Thursday, April 23.

One of the main breakthroughs of SIG is the optimization of the use of alternative fuels derived from industrial waste, biomass, to urban waste that is processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Throughout 2025, the utilization of alternative fuels increased by 24 percent to 681 thousand tons, which is equivalent to a reduction in coal use of up to 467 thousand tons. This achievement also encourages an increase in the thermal substitution rate to 9.77 percent.

In addition to contributing to the reduction of industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, this initiative is also a solution to the waste problem while opening up new economic value, including for the agricultural sector through the use of biomass.

SIG also continues to expand the use of clean energy through the installation of solar panels at various operational units as well as the use of Waste-Heat Recovery Power Generation (WHRPG) technology to convert waste heat into electricity. These efforts have yielded results with a reduction in the intensity of GHG emissions of scope 1 by 21 percent compared to the 2010 baseline, as well as a reduction in emissions of scope 2 by 15 percent compared to the 2019 baseline.

In the mining sector, SIG practices sustainable practices through ecosystem arrangement and restoration. By 2025, the company has reclaimed 628 hectares of post-mining land spread across various operational areas.

This commitment has been recognized by the government through six PROPER Green 2025 awards from the Ministry of Environment, which were won by a number of cement factories operated by SIG and its subsidiaries.

Going forward, SIG will continue to accelerate the transformation of the building materials industry with a more efficient, innovative, and environmentally responsible approach.
