JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo targets the completion of the Trans Papua Jayapura-Wamena road in the second semester of 2026.
The national strategic project is expected to be the main connecting route between regions as well as open economic and logistical access in the mountainous areas of Papua.
According to Dody, currently the project has entered a further stage after the signing of a government cooperation scheme and business entity (KPBU) or public-private partnership (PPP).
He said the tender process had been completed, and the construction began to run in several segments.
However, he acknowledged that the completion of the project faced a number of challenges on the ground.
"The land issue is still not 100 percent clear (clear), and sometimes there are still a little security disturbances here and there. That makes it very not smooth (smooth) for the construction of the Trans Papua Jayapura-Wamena Road," he quoted Antara as saying.
Regarding security challenges, Dody said that his party had received full support from local security, including the TNI and Brimob Polri.
His party is also trying to open a dialogue room with traditional leaders to resolve the land issue.

He said the construction of the Trans Papua Road was one of the government's priorities because the infrastructure was important to support the development of four new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua, namely the Provinces of South Papua, Central Papua, Papua Mountains, and Southwest Papua.
"We want to focus (on the construction of the Trans Papua Road) because one of the main points we are working on infrastructure development in the DOB (Papua) must penetrate first. If there is no road, it will also be troublesome (to build and develop the new area)," said Dody.
The Trans Papua road is part of a national road that connects every province in Papua, from Sorong City in Southwest Papua to Merauke in South Papua, with a total length of 4,330 kilometers (km).
Previously, the Directorate General of Infrastructure Financing (DJPI) of the Ministry of Public Works revealed that last August, 3,000 km of Trans Papua Roads had been opened.
