JAKARTA - Road and bridge infrastructure projects have absorbed 43,628 workers through a labor-intensive program by the Ministry of Public Works (PU).
The program was carried out by all National Road Implementation Centers (BBPJN) and the National Road Implementation Center (BPJN) of the Directorate General (Ditjen) of Highways of the Ministry of Public Works.
This is done to encourage local economic growth and help create jobs and reduce unemployment.
In the 2025 Fiscal Year (TA), the Ministry of Public Works allocated a budget of IDR 1.2 trillion for labor-intensive work in the field of roads and bridges spread across 1,059 locations.
The budget is used for small-scale infrastructure works, such as road and bridge maintenance that involve the community as the main actors.
Based on e-Monitoring data from the Ministry of Public Works as of September 24, 2025, the program's physical progress has reached 62.1 percent with an absorption of 43,628 workers or the equivalent of 2,909,075 Working People's Days (HOK).
Road labor-intensive work includes routine maintenance, such as cleaning of road medians, painting markings and minor repairs with a physical progress of 63.78 percent and absorbing 33.052 workers.
In addition, routine maintenance of road conditions has been realized 43.96 percent with an absorption of 244 workers and road support work (holding) with a progress of 62.56 percent and absorbing 23 workers.
In the bridge sector, routine maintenance work such as painting the bridge frame has reached 57.9 percent progress with an absorption of 9,674 workers from the 12,180 target.
Additional contractual labor-intensive activities also run with 33.41 percent progress, absorbing 635 workers.
PU Minister Dody Hanggodo emphasized that labor-intensive is a development strategy that is not only oriented towards physical results, but also has a real impact on the local economy.
"This program is an important instrument to ensure the benefits of development can be felt evenly in all levels of society," said Dody in a written statement, Tuesday, September 30.

By involving local residents in development, said Dody, labor-intensive works create jobs, reduce unemployment and increase people's purchasing power.
Strategicly, the labor-intensive component in dealing with poverty also supports the PU 608 target, namely investment efficiency (ICOR less than 6), poverty alleviation (to 0 percent) and driving economic growth (8 percent per year).
"Through community involvement in infrastructure development, this populist program is expected to open access to work, daily income and improve basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges," he concluded.
