JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability by utilizing renewable energy through Solar Power Plants (PLTS).

As of August 21, 2025, KAI has installed PLTS in 66 locations covering stations, offices, Yasa halls, and workhouses with an installed capacity of 1,189 kWp.

KAI Vice President of Public Relations, Anne Purba, said that this step is not only cost-oriented, but also a tangible form of KAI's seriousness in reducing dependence on fossil-based energy.

"KAI wants to provide environmentally friendly transportation from upstream to downstream, including in terms of office operations and supporting facilities. The use of solar energy is proof of this commitment," explained Anne in her statement, quoted on Sunday, August 24.

He explained that with an average energy production base of 1,400 kWh per kWp per year, the installed PLTS is able to produce around 1.66 million kWh per year.

According to him, if it is calculated with the electricity tariff in effect in July September 2025 amounting to Rp1,444 Rp1,700 per kWh, the savings obtained by KAI reaches Rp1.86 billion to Rp2.53 billion per year.

Anne emphasized that the benefits of this program are dual, in addition to reducing operational costs, the use of PLTS also contributes to reducing carbon emissions to around 1,400 tons of CO2 per year or equivalent to the positive effect of planting more than 60 thousand trees.

Anne said that the installation of PLTS had spread across various strategic points, ranging from large stations that became KAI's face in public to Yasa halls that functioned vitally in the maintenance of train facilities.

He added that thus, the principle of clean energy is really integrated in all aspects of KAI's business.

In the future, Anne said that KAI is targeting additional installation of PLTS in 23 more locations by 2025, in line with government policies in increasing the national energy mix.

"We want every step of modernizing KAI to always have a touch of sustainability. Solar energy is one of the keys to ensuring a greener future journey," he said.

Anne conveyed that this effort to utilize renewable energy is also in line with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) KAI roadmap which places environmental aspects as one of the important foundations.

According to him, the PLTS program complements various other sustainability initiatives such as train electrification, reduction of physical tickets, recycling of employee uniforms, and providing free water stations at stations.

Travel with KAI is not just mobility from one point to another, but also effort together to protect the earth. With solar energy, we want to show that sustainability can be realized in real terms and provide direct benefits for future generations," said Anne.
