JAKARTA - The Indonesian Textile Association (API) expressed concerns about the heavy imports of illegal textiles and dumpings that have the potential to erode the domestic market.

The General Chairperson of API Jemmy Kartiwa urged that the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) policy be mandatory and labeling in Indonesian be re-imposed at the border (border), as was done in 2014.

Jemmy assessed that the policy was very crucial in the midst of heavy global pressure due to the reciprocal tariff policy from the United States (US). Countries affected by the policy have the potential to delegate their goods to the Indonesian market, so it takes quick steps to protect the domestic industry.

"For the urgency of securing the domestic market from the abundance of dumping goods from other countries affected by US tariffs, we need to immediately improve regulations that still have loopholes," Jemmy said at the Joint Economic Facilities of the President of the Republic of Indonesia as seen by VOI from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube, Wednesday, April 9.

According to Jemmy, tightening supervision at the border by requiring Indonesian-language labels and SNI will be an effective initial effort.

"It is important steps that need to be taken, including the return of Indonesian and SNI language label rules that are mandatory to borderers. This will help prevent imports that are not in accordance with standards and protect domestic industries from illegal goods and allegations of transipulation alleged by the US Trade Representative (USTR), yes," he stressed.

Therefore, the API assessed that the Indonesian government must show a strict commitment to supervision of the flow of goods entering.

Furthermore, Jemmy also asked President Prabowo Subianto to support the acceleration of the revision of Government Regulation (PP) related to anti-dumping security and security of domestic trade. The revision of the regulation, he said, is being discussed across ministries.

"We ask for the support of the President regarding the acceleration of the revision of the PP regarding anti- dumping security and security of domestic trade, which is being discussed across ministries," said Jemmy.

"Strong and effective regulation in this field is very important to create healthy competition and prevent unfair trade practices," he added.
