JAKARTA - Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that the packaged drinking water (AMDK) industry plays an important role in maintaining the availability of safe drinking water for the community and quality, as well as making a real contribution to the national economy through the absorption of labor and strengthening the water distribution system.
"Therefore, its development must continue to be driven by the principles of sustainability and regulatory compliance," said Agus as quoted from a written statement, Monday, April 20.
Based on industry data, currently there are 707 AMDK factories with a total capacity of 47 billion liters per year and an investment value of Rp. 27.8 trillion.
In its operations, the AMDK industry utilizes water resources consisting of surface water of 7.09 billion liters, groundwater of 41.08 billion liters and 6.93 billion liters from water supply companies. Thus, total usage reaches 55.1 billion liters per year or equivalent to 0.055 billion cubic meters per year.
The Acting Director General of the Agro Industry Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) explained that the utilization of groundwater, including that obtained from water companies by the AMDK industry, is 48.01 billion liters per year or about 0.048 billion cubic meters per year. This figure is equivalent to about 0.23 percent of the groundwater capacity in the depressed aquifers in Indonesia.
"Commitment to sustainable water resources management and regulatory compliance is one of the focus of the development of the AMDK industry," he said.
Regulationally, the AMDK industry operates in accordance with the provisions of Law Number 17 of 2019 concerning Water Resources and its derivative regulations, including the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 14 of 2024 and the Minister of Public Works and Housing Regulation Number 2 of 2024.
In addition, AMDK is a product that falls within the scope of Mandatory SNI with periodic supervision carried out by the Product Certification Agency and supervised through the e-Wasdal system.
"In the future, we hope that the synergy between the government, industry and society can be forged more strongly as our efforts to maintain the sustainability of the AMDK industry, especially in water resource management and plastic waste control," said Putu.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry together with Commission VII of the DPR RI conducted a visit to PT Tirta Alam Segar in Cikarang and PT Tirta Investama in Klaten some time ago in reviewing the industry's compliance with licensing regulations, the environment, and the effectiveness of water resource management and product quality.
PT Tirta Alam Segar is part of the Wings Group and produces AMDK brand AQUVIVA with a capacity of 50 million bottles per month, and absorbs 2,800 employees, more than 90 percent of which are local people.
The company also carries out various sustainability initiatives, including the construction of a 10.8 MWp rooftop PLTS which has an impact on reducing 15,078 tons of CO2 emissions per year, the use of Reverse Osmosis technology for wastewater recycling with water savings of 20-30 percent and the provision of 24 Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) points through cooperation with Plasticpay.
