JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) will soon start construction of the permanent Krueng Tingkeum bridge in Aceh Province.

This is to support connectivity on the Bireuen City Road - Bireuen Border / North Aceh has been restored after the Krueng Tingkeum / Kuta Blang Bridge was cut off due to the Sumatra flash flood in late November 2025.

Minister PU Dody Hanggodo revealed that the construction of the permanent bridge is planned to start on January 20, 2026.

According to Dody, maintaining the connectivity of road and bridge infrastructure is the government's top priority in emergency disaster situations, given its vital role for community activities and logistics distribution.

"The PU Ministry through the Aceh National Road Implementation Center (BPJN) is preparing a permanent handling of the Krueng Tingkeum Bridge by building a duplicate bridge. The construction of the permanent bridge is planned to start on January 20, 2026," said Dody as quoted from a written statement, Wednesday, January 14.

The Krueng Tingkeum Bridge is located in Bireuen City on the Bireuen-North Aceh (East Line) section which connects the Bireuen area with Lhokseumawe City. The existing bridge is 120 meters long with three spans and a steel girder structure was built in 2017.

The bridge was also damaged and cut off by the flood on November 26, 2025.

Head of the National Road Implementation Agency (BPJN) Aceh, the Directorate General of Road Construction of the Ministry of PU Heri Yugiantoro, said the bridge is one of the strategic infrastructure connecting the main regions.

He said, the initial stage of permanent work had begun, including land acquisition, relocation of utilities and electricity poles and preparation of drafting work.

"If there are no obstacles, especially regarding the distribution of materials, the groundbreaking for the permanent bridge is planned to begin on January 20 or the third week of January 2026," he said.

Previously, the PU Ministry had installed a 63-meter bailey bridge on the damaged stretch to ensure smooth traffic.

The bailey bridge has been functioning since December 27, 2025, while the Awe Geutah alternative route has been functioning since December 18, 2025.
