JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) revealed that only about 1.2 million hectares of cultivated land on land, sea and coast, have been utilized to date.

In fact, the potential for cultivation land in the country is quite large.

"Indonesia has the potential for land to cultivate on land, sea and coast, which amounts to almost 18 million hectares, with the use of only 1.2 million hectares or 6.8 percent," said Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono in a written statement, Friday, November 7th.

Therefore, said Trenggono, his party has also developed modern cultivation models for a number of commodities, one of which is tilapia copy in Karawang.

"We have brought success in Karawang to a larger scale, namely in the form of a pond revitalization program for tilapia copy cultivation, where the initial stage of construction covers an area of 20.000 hectares in West Java," he said.

The concept of developing a pond revitalization in Pantura Java is not only focused on production, but is accompanied by the development of a mangrove ecosystem area as a natural environmental buffer.

In addition to developing mangrove areas, revitalization ponds are also equipped with wastewater management installations (IPAL).

"Management of good cultivation must be properly managed by the waste. And the management of this waste is not only cultivated, including in residential areas of fishing villages. For this, we have also prepared the Kampung Fisherman Merah Putih program," he said.

The 20,000 hectares of revitalization program in West Java is also projected to produce around 1.56 million tons of tilapia copies per year, which will contribute to increasing the number of national cultivation fishery products.

"The amount of production is due to the application of good fish farming methods and modern production technology. Thus, productivity increases to 130 tons per hectare of production land per cycle from 0.6 tons per hectare per year," explained Trenggono.

Regarding the market, Trenggono is not worried because the world's protein needs continue to increase every year, including those from fishery products.

"The Middle East is a potential market because its people love tilapia and many Indonesian citizens are there to work, go to school or worship," he concluded.
