BPS Reveals The Majority Of Unemployment Due To Layoffs Comes From Mining Industry To Trade

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the number of national unemployed in August 2025 reached 7.46 million people or about 0.77 percent of the total unemployment was a victim of layoffs (PHK).

BPS Deputy for Balance and Statistics Analysis Moh Edy Mahmud explained that the majority of unemployment due to layoffs came from the manufacturing, mining and trade industry sectors.

"So of the total unemployment of 0.77 percent was previously laid off a year ago. The most layoffs affected by layoffs came from the manufacturing, mining and trade industries," he said at a BPS press conference, Wednesday, November 5.

Furthermore, Edy added, about 9.07 percent of the total unemployment consists of individuals who have been accepted to work or have businesses, but have not started working or run their businesses.

"I already have a business But it hasn't started when structuring So this is 9.07 percent, so the future starter has already been received, but hasn't started work yet or has business activities but hasn't started its business activities yet, so this is included in the unemployment category," he explained.

In addition, he conveyed that unemployment from the new graduate group (fresh graduate) and newcomers in the work market (new ENTrants) was recorded at 14.58 percent.

"Then the third is, the workforce that has just graduated in the last year, so new ventures and fresh graduates, which are not absorbed, so it has not been absorbed, only entered the labor market or those who have just graduated, the new ventures and fresh graduates are 14.58 percent," he said.

Edy said that long-term unemployment, namely those looking for work for more than a year, reached 31.08 percent.

"The new non fresh graduate workforce is 13.97 percent. And the sixth is to have had experience before but currently unemployed, it's 30.53 percent," he added.

Previously, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the number of unemployed in Indonesia in August 2025 reached 7.46 million people.

Edy explained that this number showed a decline of around 4,000 people compared to the same period in the previous year.

"The workforce that is not absorbed by the labor market has become unemployed, which is 7.46 million people or a decrease of around 4,000 people compared to August 2024," he said.

Furthermore, Edy said, the number of working-age population as of August 2025 reached 218.17 million people, or an increase of 2.80 million people compared to the previous year.

Dari jumlah tersebut, angkatan kerja mencapai 154 juta orang atau naik 1,89 juta orang, sedangkan bukan angkatan kerja tercatat 64,17 juta orang, meningkat sekitar 0,91 juta orang.

Edy menyampaikan dari total angkatan kerja itu, 146,54 juta orang di antaranya telah bekerja, bertambah sekitar 1,90 juta orang dibandingkan Agustus 2024.

"Jika dirinci, penduduk yang bekerja terdiri dari yang pertama pekerja penuh yang sebanyak 98,65 juta orang atau bertambah sekitar 0,20 juta orang. Sementara pekerja paruh waktu sebanyak 36,29 juta orang bertambah 1,66 juta orang. Kemudian yang setengah pengangguran yang sebanyak 11,60 juta orang atau bertambah 0,04 juta orang," katanya.

Of this number, the workforce reached 154 million people, an increase of 1.89 million people, while non-workforces were recorded at 64.17 million people, an increase of about 0.91 million people.

Edy said that of the total workforce, 146.54 million of them have worked, an increase of about 1.90 million people compared to August 2024.

"If detailed, the working population consisted of the first full worker who was 98.65 million people or an increase of about 0.20 million people. Meanwhile, 36.29 million part-time workers increased by 1.66 million people. Then 11.60 million people or an increase of 0.04 million people," he said.
