Minister Trenggono Ensures Radioactive Cases Cs-137 Don't Affect Shrimp Exports

JAKARTA - Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono confirmed that the case of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) radioactive contamination, which had targeted frozen shrimp products from Indonesia, would not affect the export market.

He stated that the government continues to discuss with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the agency found that Indonesian shrimp containers were contaminated with Cs-137 substances.

"We are intensely talking to the FDA. We are talking and we are currently negotiating. I don't think there is a problem. The point is that we have to convince that the shrimp sent there is really under control, does not contain radioactiveity and so on," Trenggono said when met at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2025 at the Jakarta Convention Center, Friday, October 10.

In addition, Trenggono also ensured that the problem would not interfere with negotiations on trade rates with Uncle Sam's country.

"It has nothing to do with this, right, about the contamination," he added.

Previously, the Task Force through the Ministry of Environment (LH) had sealed PT Peter Metal Technology (PMT) in the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate, Banten, allegedly a source of radioactive contamination from PT BMS frozen shrimp products exported to the US.

Regarding the handling of local public health, the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) will handle it in the community.

Sementara untuk 1.500 orang terlibat dengan dua perusahaan terdampak diminta memeriksa kesehatan secara mandiri.

Kemenkes sendiri telah memeriksa 1.591 pekerja dan warga dari dua lokasi terdampak.

Sebanyak sembilan orang terdeteksi positif terpapar Cs-137 telah dirujuk ke RSUP Fatmawati dan dipulangkan dalam kondisi stabil.

Meanwhile, for 1,500 people involved with two affected companies, they were asked to check their health independently.

The Ministry of Health itself has examined 1,591 workers and residents from two affected locations.

A total of nine people who were detected positive for Cs-137 have been referred to Fatmawati Hospital and sent home in stable condition.
