PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN), through its subsidiary PT Gagas Energi Indonesia (PGN Gagas), officially started the construction of the first Mother Station (MS) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Medan City on Friday, September 19.

MS Medan, which was built in June 2025, is designed with a capacity of up to 1 MMSCFD and is projected to be able to serve natural gas needs in the form of CNG up to 4.48 BBTUD in the North Sumatra region, including the Industrial, Commercial, and MSME sectors.

Subkordinator Penyipanan Planning Pembangunan Infrastruktur Migas, Safriyanto, menyampaikan bahwa CNG merupakan alternatif energi strategis yang berperan penting sebagai jembatan dalam proses transisi energi di Indonesia.

He emphasized that CNG is not only an efficient energy alternative, but is also a concrete manifestation of equitable access to energy for the community.

"By utilizing natural gas through CNG, Indonesia will tread the pillar of the energy transition that connects a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future," said Safriyanto, Monday, September 22.

In line with Safriyanto, PGN Commercial Director Aldiansyah Idham added that this project not only expands the natural gas market, but also strengthens national energy security and encourages regional economic growth in a sustainable manner.

"The development of MS Medan is a form of Subholding Gas' commitment in supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target through providing affordable clean energy and can be accessed widely by the community while supporting the Government's program in reducing subsidies because 100% of natural gas supply comes from within the country," said Aldiansyah.

President Director of Gagas Santiaji Gunawan, said that currently development has entered its early stages, including Civil Works such as the demolition of existing buildings, backfilling, and land pamadatan.

"We are optimistic that MS Medan can start operating before the end of 2025 to serve business actors in Medan City and its surroundings," he said

The construction of MS Medan also involves synergy with PT PGN Solution as a construction implementing partner and is expected to improve the quality of natural gas services through an efficient and environmentally friendly CNG.

Currently, Gagas has distributed natural gas through CNG to various sectors through 15 SSPBG and 4 Mobile Refueling Units (MRU) spread across 7 provinces, with the distribution target in 2025 reaching 11.37 BBTUD.
